A Few Words from Linda

About Silkwood...

The one million dollar question???? Why did Silkwood Close...? The current growth of the chain bookstore did have an impact, but the "straws that broke the camel's back" were the changes on Monroe Avenue. The closing of Village Green, the food co-op, and the Mission Cafe, and the relocation of the credit union all had a trickle down effect. The loss of these institutions just gave people one more reason not to visit the Avenue. The future of Monroe Avenue is questionable ...Is the Pizza Hut in the old VG a reason to visit the area? Is the Mission Cafe being replaced by yet another bar going to contribute to a revitalization? All the signs indicated it was time to close this chapter in the history of another Monroe Avenue landmark. Sad... you bet!

Silkwood opened on October 31, 1982 and closed her doors for the last time on June 3, 2000... 18 years old (almost), and what a life. The store was more than just four walls and an address on a popular street. Silkwood was about growth, community, connections, change, and acceptance. As the person blessed with being able to maintain the store for all those years, I can only say "Thank You" to all the wonderful individuals who supported and believed in Silkwood. I will carry the memories for the rest of my life. Think of Silkwood and plant a tree... the tree of life.
