Silkwood Pictures

Some of these pictures (marked with an Silkwood Photo ) were provided by Linda and Judy; they have Linda's comments by them. The others (marked with a Wayshelter Photo ) I took myself; they have my own comments by them. I was not present during the time the early pictures were taken, but I became a customer sometime not long after.

  In the beginning...

So Much WorkSilkwood Photo "So Much Work" was while we were working on the interior. "So much work, excitement, and our dog just wanted to go home."

FloorSilkwood Photo "Floor" The floor being rebuilt. We rebuilt most of the floor... did all the work ourselves. Judy is a woman of many, many talents, and I am good at following directions.

Opening 2Silkwood Photo "Opening 2" was 10/31/82, and we never did figure out who the guy was. He just appeared to be walking down the street and decided to open the door for folks arriving.

Door OpSilkwood Photo "Door Op" is the guy opening for folks.

OpeningSilkwood Photo "Opening" GRAND OPENING, and the store was filled to capacity all day. We opened at 10am and the last person left at about 8pm ...What a birth!

More Great MusicSilkwood Photo "More Great Music" was, again, at the opening. A group of women moved a piano in and provided music ...such class!

First Book SigningSilkwood Photo "First Book Signing", early 1983, for the book "Reweaving the Web of Life". The author, Pam MacAlister, is the one in pink, next to Natalie. Yes, that is my Judy behind Natalie.

On the last couple of days and the day after...

DeskWayshelter Photo "Desk" Linda behind the desk: an image we'll always remember.

DoorwayWayshelter Photo "Doorway" The view from the back of the store.

Shelf IslandWayshelter Photo "Shelf Island", where T-shirts, books, and other items were displayed.

My BookWayshelter Photo "Consignment" Linda was kind enough to accept the Basica on consignment so that I could register it with the copyright office as a self-published work.

CardsWayshelter Photo "Cards" One of the two tall card racks next to the radiator... The type of heating in the store added to its charm. A reminder of an older era gone by... Times keep right on changing.

ChairWayshelter Photo "Chair" That familiar piece of furniture that contributed to Silkwood's character so well.

StickersWayshelter Photo "Stickers" Silkwood was a great source of fun, clever, and unusual stickers. There were always a few on display in the window and many more inside.

Mom and Baby OutsideWayshelter Photo "Mom and Baby Outside" A tiny customer helps Mom look over some of the last few things for sale on the last day of business.

SignsWayshelter Photo "Signs" The hanging sign and the sidewalk sign. You could always tell when Silkwood was open from way down the street by looking for the sidewalk sign.

BuildingWayshelter Photo "Building" The building in which Silkwood could be found.

Last LookSilkwood Photo "Last Look" was 6/4/00, and was the day after the last ...our last look ...all traces of personality [gone]. The only reminders are the signs in the window for the web site.

"It does seem funny to have week-ends at home, after 18 years of Saturdays in the store." - Linda - June 27, 2000
