My SCA Filk

Original music and lyrics:
"I'm Gonna Mail Myself to You"
by Woody Guthrie

(I wonder if he'd be spinning in his grave right now or just wishing all wars were held the way we hold ours... We arrive and depart as friends, make every effort to keep anyone from actually being harmed, meet new people with whom we have plenty of fun times, and take home with us wonderful memories that we'll always cherish - sometimes along with more than we know how to pack into our vehicles after a few trips through the merchant area.)

Original music and lyrics:
"On Top of Old Smokey"
an American folk tune

(I guess you could thank my cold germs for this one. Thanks to their little party, I had about three hours of intermittant sleep early in the night one night, followed by a couple more hours in the morning of kind of dozing. In the bleary, wretched, and drippy state that followed, these sad and wistful words emerged.)

I'm Gonna Go to War with You
Filk Lyrics written in 2006 by Lord Carlo Gallucci

I'm gonna wrap myself in duct tape
Arm myself with a weapon or two
Stick a helm on the top of my head
And I'm gonna go to War with you

I'm gonna tie a pennant on my polearm
I'm gonna fight for the red or the blue
Climb up in my truck and pull my trailer
And drive many hours to War with you

When you find me on the battlefield
Cry, "LAY ON!" and let me loose
Then fill me up with watered down Gatorade
And feed me olives and fresh produce

When I step off of the battlefield
I'll take a shower in Pennsic rust
Shoot an arrow or throw an ax
And breathe the aroma of Pennsic dust

When you find me off the battlefield
Shop with me at a merchant or three
Take a class, see a show, go dancing in the barn...
          *Whew!*
And cap off the evening with a camp party

I'm gonna wrap myself in duct tape
Arm myself with a weapon or two
Stick a helm on the top of my head
And I'm gonna go to War with you

On Top of Mount Eislinn
Filk Lyrics written in 2007 by Lord Carlo Gallucci

On top of Mount Eislinn,
All covered with sun,
I lost my poor arrow -
And I had me but one.

I emptied my quiver,
Put the nock to the string.
And when I released it,
It went with a zing!

It flew past the targets
And sailed through the brush.
And then my poor arrow
Got lodged in the mush.

I searched there for hours,
Through grass and in bark.
Then, when I gave up and stepped back,
I heard a *snap* in the dark...

On top of Mount Eislinn,
All covered with sun,
I lost my poor arrow -
And I had me but one.

Original music and lyrics:
"IT'S SLINKY!"
original advertisement jingle

(After seeing someone else's video parody of this ad, I just couldn't help myself. Besides, it's sort of fitting that I would make a filk about a reenactment group with a tune from my childhood, when the toy I so fondly remember was still made out of metal. Things change, but we can still enjoy whatever we retain or regain from times gone by.)

Original music and lyrics:
Cotton Mill Girls
Appalachian folk tune popularized by Heddy West

(It's worthwhile to know a little something about the life of young women factory workers during the time in American history when this song was written. It's also worthwhile to hear Heddy West singing this tune and others. The authenticity her voice brought to her performances cannot be duplicated by singers not raised amongst the people from whom these lyrics sprang. It is my hope that the posting of this filk will encourage a little curiosity about a bygone era in this part of the world as well as explain a bit about what appeals today to so many people in different countries about joining an organization started by a bunch of young Americans for the purpose of recreating a time and place more distant to them.)

IT'S THESCORRE!
Filk Lyrics written in 2007 by Lord Carlo Gallucci

Who's dancing there
In circles and pairs
And making a Medieval sound?
Who fences and sings
And makes marvelous things?
Everyone knows it's Thescorre!

Who's baron is tall?
Who's arms have a pall
With three ravens flying around?
Who's sewing with flair?
They're industrious there!
Everyone knows it's Thescorre!

It's Thescorre! It's Thescorre!
From Vikings to Mongols and more...
It's Thescorre! It's Thescorre!
Come revel in days of yore!

Who's drummers are spiff?
Who's cooks have a gift?
Who's service is known world renowned?
Who's brewing great stuff?
Who's fighters are tough?
Everyone knows it's Thescorre!

A raven's feather,
A black talon,
A broach are our awards.
A good deed, you said?
Get a raven's egg!
Everyone knows it's Thescorre!

It's Thescorre! It's Thescorre!
The barony we all adore...
It's Thescorre! It's Thescorre!
It's fun for a lady and lord!
It's fun for a lady and lord!

It's the Old Times, Ladies and Lords
Filk Lyrics written in 2007 by Lord Carlo Gallucci

Well, I've lived in the old days all my life;
I always have a belt with a pouch and a knife.
I've slipped from the bonds of modern strife.
It's the old times everywhere.

CHORUS:
It's the old times, ladies and lords.
It's the old times, ladies and lords.
It's the old times, ladies and lords.
It's the old times everywhere.

Now, back in the day, they had them a fight,
But they did it with honor, and they did it right.
By the end of the day, they'd made them a knight.
It's the old times everywhere.

CHORUS

Life could be rough on a Medieval day,
But we take the best in the game we play.
We toss out the plague, but the arts can stay.
It's the old times everywhere.

CHORUS

When I die, gather in a great hall,
And lay out a feast for one and all.
Hang my banner on a pole, lean my shield on the wall.
It's the old times everywhere.

CHORUS

CHORUS
